Sandy met John Stewart in Sept. 2006,
and told him that she stole a line from
him for a song she'd just written.
With a twinkle in his eye, he smiled
and patted her shoulder, then said,
"You better have a good lawyer."
She said, "I didn't take the line
from one of your songs. I took it from
your introduction to 'July, You're a
Woman.' It was on a live concert recording."
He said, "Well, then, that's
okay. Tell me about the song."
She said, "It's called 'Hitchhiker,'
and starts 'Sun in my eyes, cold wind
in my hair / With a sign that just said
please.'"
He interrupted and said, "That's
a great line. That's a wonderful line!
This is a great song because it has
such a great line in it!"
She said, "Yes, I know. That's why I stole it
from you."

"I was hanging out at the car
dealership, in 2001, watching them rearrange
the 4-wheel-drives in the showroom.
I came out of there with the chorus.
From time to time I worked on it, but
couldn't come up with verses. In summer,
2005, I sang the chorus to a couple
of band mates who both offered to write
the verses. In spring, 2006, a third
band mate said, 'Just write the verses
yourself!' so I did.
"John Stewart, B.J.
Suter and Christy
Wessler contributed to the lyrics. Ernie
Martinez arranged the song and changed
the third verse into the bridge."
